As a local mom and the publisher of Macaroni KID Palmer-Monson, I get to hear about a lot of programs, events, and camps in our area. But there’s one that holds a special place in my heart (and on my family’s summer calendar): Summer Days at Hitchcock Academy.
Why We Chose Hitchcock:
My kids have been attending for several years now, and every summer, it’s the same story: they count down the days, come home full of stories, and beg to go back the next day. And honestly? I get it.
Summer Days at Hitchcock isn’t a flashy mega-camp, and that’s what makes it so special. It’s local, affordable, and deeply rooted in the community. It feels like the kind of summer we had growing up: fresh air, hands-on fun, new friendships, and the freedom to just be a kid.
Weekly Highlights & Guest Experiences:
Each week has a playful theme and brings something new, from bubble-making parties with Mik’s Mega Bubbles to magic shows with Michael Wald, a performer who keeps kids laughing and completely engaged. Campers also get to meet special guests like M&M Family Farm (yes, there are goats!) and dive into hands-on science with the always-popular Mad Science “Spin, Pop, Boom” show, bringing STEM to life. There’s even fort-building fun with Opacum Land Trust, where kids collect natural materials and work together to create hideouts and nature play spaces.
What Sets the Staff Apart:
The activities are thoughtful and engaging, without being over-programmed. And the staff? Truly wonderful. This year’s coordinator, Meaghin Carbonneau, is not only a seasoned camp leader but also a classroom educator at Old Sturbridge Academy. She and her team (including some amazing local teens) create a space that feels safe, inclusive, and joyful.
Easy for Parents, Joyful for Kids:
As a parent, I love the flexibility: you can sign up for AM, PM, or full-day sessions, and they offer sibling discounts and even single-day registration. When my oldest first started, I only signed her up for half days—I wanted to ease her into camp life, and Summer Days made that transition feel so smooth and welcoming. That kind of ease is hard to find, and such a gift during the busy summer months.
But more than anything, what keeps us coming back is the feel of the place. Hitchcock Academy is more than a building; it’s a community hub where kids are known, welcomed, and celebrated.
If you’re still looking for summer plans, I can wholeheartedly recommend giving Summer Days a try. There are still spots left for 2025, and I know your kiddos will come home with muddy shoes, bubble-sticky fingers, and big smiles.
